Ask a growth team what leads their forecast and you will hear pipeline coverage, or opportunity creation, or some version of qualified lead. All of these are late. By the time someone turns into an opportunity, the marketing that caused it happened months earlier.
Branded search sits ahead of all of them. Someone typing your company name into a search box has already decided you are worth finding. They heard about you somewhere, from a colleague, a podcast, a post, or a conference hallway. Whatever the touchpoint was, it worked well enough that they went looking. That is the moment demand becomes visible, and it happens well before any form gets filled.
Why the number holds up with a CFO
The useful part is that branded search does not care about your attribution setup. It needs no cookies, no UTM discipline, no self-reported source field. It is a count of people who wanted to find you. When it rises, something you did is working, even if you cannot say which thing. That is also why it survives a conversation with a CFO. Most marketing metrics invite an argument about whether the model is fair. Branded query volume invites the question of why it is going up, which is a much better place to be.
How to track it without fooling yourself
Track it monthly. Search Console gives you the branded queries. Put direct traffic next to it, and add your review site profile views if you can reach them. The three together tell you whether awareness is building or sitting flat.
One caution. Branded search rises after brand campaigns, but it also rises after a funding announcement, a competitor outage, or a post that pulled in the wrong audience. Check what else happened before you claim the spike.
And read a flat line seriously. If branded search has not moved in two quarters while paid spend climbed, you are buying transactions rather than building anything. That can be a fair choice. It is just worth knowing which one you are running.
The reason nobody reports this number is that it maps to no channel, so it belongs to no one. Which is exactly why it is honest.
